Tanya Wales (b. 1978) is an abstract painter based in South Australia. The scale and tranquillity of Tanya’s works invite the audience to pause, to breathe, to feel. Spurning the use of familiar reference points to elicit an emotional response, the flowing forms and fields of colour provoke deeply personal and diverse interpretations. A confluence of techniques including pouring, transparent layers, fine brushwork and painterly marks are used to create an otherworldly narrative balanced by a sense of ambiguity and spatiality. Plentiful Heart is a duochrome that modulates between vermillion and rose madder. Belying the contemporary feel of the abstraction, both of these colours have been used for thousands of years. They have not only an ancient heritage but were used in both Europe and China and Japan. The title suggests its many poetic resonances from blushes and blood and Romance, to illustrated love letters and dyed articles of clothing.
